Re: Corporal punishment in Blyton books Quote Post by Comerscroft » 19 FebWell, as an eight-year old, I was 'dared' to go into a neighbour's garden and pull up her flowers because we didn't like her, nor she us. Unfortunately, she caught me and I was dragged round to my house where me father answered the door to this irate woman while I cowered behind the porch. My parents were embarrassed, and furious with me.
My mother took me upstairs and told me to get undressed and into bed. Suddenly, I was over her knee and being given a thoroughly smacked bottom, and the sting of it remains in my mind 50 years later.
Then, I had to get dressed and was taken round to the neighbour's house where I had to apologise and explain why I had done this. I can't remember what I said, but on return to my home, I was then sent to bed without any supper. Rough justice? It was the way things were done, and infinitely preferable to all the mealy-mouthed 'free expression' etc, etc claptrap of today.

There is still much that we can learn from other species. Contact Stephen. Two examples here. Firstly there's 'Simon's Clean Handkerchief' where a boy through forgetfulness, carelessness or just misfortune fails to bring a clean handkerchief to school each day, much to the Smacked bottom stories annoyance of his teacher.
At one point she threatens to spank him the next day if he doesn't bring one. So he actually turns a hankerchief into a cap, wears it on his head, but forgets it's on there. When he can't find his handkerchief the next day, the teacher says "Take off your cap and come indoors and be spanked! You've only just saved yourself a spanking!
Corporal punishment was merely a consequence of continually getting it wrong. It didn't strike me as unfair. But can you imagine a writer trying to get that published today? The other example in 'Stories For Bedtime' was in an old favourite of mine, 'One Little Match' where two naughty pixie friends try to make real smoke come from their toy engine's funnel, and subsequently set fire to it, the curtains and the lampshade. Perhaps even more controversially by today's softly softly standardsBOTH pixies get spanked by the mother of the one in this house, and the friend "was sent home crying.
Again, it didn't bother me too much as a young reader, other than how embarrassing and shameful it would be to get into that situation in the first place. If I had been so naughty around a friend's house and punished in such a way, I'd want to keep it quiet. I certainly wouldn't tell my parents hoping that they would have a word with my friend's mother.
They'd have most probably told me off themselves! So it's been over a quarter century. We boys preferred the cane to other innovative forms of punishment such as writing out boring essays or being asked to stand on the bench or missing soccer practice. For one thing our mostly female teachers were quite gentle and their caning didn't hurt much. For another, it was over before you knew it.
However, the mild humiliation of being publicly singled out for this kind of 'special treatment' was an effective deterrent.

A 3-year old was screaming, "I want that toy" for about ten minutes, his mother then dragged him out, and you could still hear him screaming way in the distance. We later caught them up, and the stupid woman was saying, "Darling, what a noisy boy you are! You must stop making such a noise!Smacked bottom stories
